When developing the site keep in mind that you should develop the pages keeping SEO in mind. What I mean by this is that you should code your site very clean, keeping your keywords to the top. Optimize all of your graphics for best load time performance, and make it as easy as possible to use, dummy proof it in a way.
After the basic development of the site, depending on the type of site, you need to now make it more interactive and dynamic. So if your building a shopping cart you need to integrate the whole ecommerce platform, such as feeding in the products, checkout pages, and more. In this step you really need to go through the site and optimize each page for each keyword that you are going after, also optimize it for speed, test for errors, and have others test it for usability.
Following the steps above will help you in the start of building a successful website, but keep in mind that after launching your site there is still a lot more involved such as marketing.
